What are the Basic Motor Skills?
What is the Basic motor skills? ( Writing and drawing skills). Step-by-Step Tutorial Online Lesson 2023
Gross motor skills, which involve large muscle movements, are important for activities such as walking, running, jumping, and climbing. These skills help children explore their surroundings and develop a sense of balance and coordination. They also play a role in social development, as children need to be able to move around freely in order to interact with others.
Fine motor skills, which involve small muscle movements, are important for activities such as eating, dressing, writing, and drawing. These skills help children develop independence and self-care. They also play a role in cognitive development, as children need to use fine motor skills to manipulate objects and explore their environment.
Here are some techniques of holding a pencil:
The tripod grip is the most common way to hold a pencil. In this grip, the child's thumb and index finger are placed on the pencil in a tripod-like shape, with the middle finger providing support underneath. This grip is typically developed between the ages of 4 and 6.
The dynamic tripod grip is a variation of the tripod grip in which the child's fingers move more freely around the pencil. This grip is typically developed between the ages of 6 and 8.
The lateral grip is a less common way to hold a pencil. In this grip, the child's thumb and forefinger are placed on the pencil on the same side. This grip is typically seen in children who have difficulty with fine motor skills.
The age group at which children develop basic motor skills varies depending on the individual child. However, most children will develop the following skills by the following ages:
Crawling - 7-9 months
Walking - 12-15 months
Running - 18-24 months
Jumping - 24-30 months
Climbing - 30-36 months
Holding a pencil - 4-6 years
It is important to provide children with opportunities to practice basic motor skills throughout their early years. This can be done through activities such as playing on the playground, drawing, painting, and using puzzles. By providing children with these opportunities, you can help them develop the skills they need to be successful in school and in life.
